I grew up surrounded by the cornfields of the Midwest in a small town filled with Italianate and Neo-Gothic style homes and buildings, split by a mighty river and surrounded by caves and bluffs carved out by glaciers.

My best friend and I started walking downtown to shop when we were in the sixth grade, taking a lunch along to eat in the park, or a dollar to eat at the counter at the five and dime.

As the years passed, the established department stores started to close until eventually, when I married, I registered at the local hardware store for my wedding gifts.
